【Cancelled】 Discover Japan: A regenerative fisheries industry that safeguards the ocean from the global environmental issues of “ocean desertification”(Feb. 6, 2024)
Explore Tour
A sustainable approach to supplying the world with Japanese-cultivated sea urchins via regenerative fisheries industry that utilizes high-quality aquaculture technology.
Sanriku is among the world’s three largest fishing grounds, along with Canada’s Grand Banks and the Norwegian coast. The Kita Sanriku Factory provides top-tier seafood, including high-end Japanese cuisine ingredients like abalone and sea urchin.
The “Uni Farm” is the sole fishing ground globally designed to promote natural seaweed proliferation, contributing to its exclusivity. To address the issue of ocean desertification, a widespread environmental problem, we aim to establish a connection between nature and the future. Let’s learn from the producers about the methods they use to maintain the environment while producing high-quality food.
What is “Sea Desertification”?
“Seaforests,” or large marine algae, are reportedly 2.4 times more effective than forests in absorbing CO2.
Sea desertification, a pressing worldwide environmental concern, refers to the increasing seawater temperatures brought about by global warming. This, in turn, has led to a surge in the number of seaweed-eating organisms such as sea urchins. The surge in the population of these creatures leads to the depletion of kelp from the ocean bed, as they consume seaweeds and other types of kelp. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as “rocky shore scorch,” or “iso-yaki”, in Japanese.
Creatures that live in environments where seaweed flourish will lose their habitat and the ecosystem will no longer be able to be maintained. Without kelp, sea urchins become less profitable and must be discarded.
The Kitasanriku Factory is dedicated to developing solutions to create a sustainable future for the region and the fisheries industry on a global scale..
